This worked for me beautifully. It would open only as a Read Only document without the password. My spreadsheet was password protected in Excel 4, way back when.
I opened it in Open Office, deselected the Sheet protection, then used Save As to save it under a different name. (I added a 05 to the original name.) I also saved it as a Excel 4 document, then upgraded it by opening it in my current 2008 Excel and, again, using save as to save it as the current version.
Now I can see all of the formulas that took weeks to develop way back then. I can also revise anything I want to revise. I still have the original protected version, but your procedure worked to open it and save an unprotected version.
